Medical Assistant Requirements

There are a few employers out there that will give you on the job training to become a medical assistant, but most employers will require that you are certified through an accredited teaching program. These programs can be taken at most community colleges and vocational facilities in your local area.

The accreditation will need to be through either CAAHEP or ABHES, and can offer internships at local hospitals or clinics. These certifications last anywhere from 2 to 4 years, and you will need to recertify at that time to keep your certification.

If you are going into the medical field and want to deal first hand with patients, then taking the medical assistants training for the medical side of things will help you out greatly. If you are looking to go more towards the administrative side, then you can get training for that side as well.

This gives you the option to choose which path you want your medical career to go down, and that makes the rewards at the end even better. There is no other position in the medical field that will give you as many options as the medical assistant position can give to you.

Because of the lack of national licensing regulations, some employers might require that you are certified in a certain area before being allowed to do certain procedures. Of course, there are others that won’t require any certification as well. This aspect usually depends on the state that you are currently working in. If you find that you need a particular certification for procedures where you are employed, you can simply sign up for a class and get certified. Your employer will have information about what procedures, if any, require a separate certification or licensing to perform.

Because there are no national requirements and the state requirements are different depending on which one you live in, it is hard to pin point any exact regulations pertaining to certifying as a medical assistant. You can take schooling so you start your career in a ready to work aspect or you can find a company that is willing to train on the job and work your way up from there.

It really depends on whether or not you have the time to get the training in a school or if you would prefer to work your way to the top.
